Applying online is necessary—not sufficient. A thoughtful follow-up 48 hours after applying can move you from automated silence to a human skim. The goal is not pressure; it is a second touch that adds value: specialty fit, one new proof point, and an easy reply.

When to send

  • 48–72 hours after applying through an ATS or company site
  • Tuesday–Thursday mornings often see higher recruiter inbox attention
  • Skip follow-up if the posting says “no calls or emails”
  • One follow-up maximum unless invited to continue the thread

What to include

  • Role title and requisition ID if available
  • One sentence on lane fit (device specialty, geography)
  • One bullet of proof not obvious in the auto-parsed résumé
  • Link to LinkedIn or portfolio if relevant
  • Thank them for considering—no desperation language

Sample framework

Subject: Following up — [Job Title] — [Your Name]. Body: I applied on [date] for [role] and wanted to confirm my interest. My background includes [one proof line relevant to OR/case/territory]. I am particularly interested because [specific company or territory hook]. Happy to provide a brag book or references at your convenience. Thank you for your time.

Follow-up is a nudge, not a novel. One email, one new reason to open your résumé again.
