Remote Medical Device Sales Jobs:
Do They Actually Exist?
The hard truth about "remote" device sales. What's actually possible, what's not, and what "remote" really means in this industry.
See the RealityThe Hard Truth
You cannot cover spine surgery from your home office
"Remote" in device sales = live anywhere, travel to territory (not work from home)
Why Device Sales Is NOT Remote
OR Coverage Required
Surgeons need you in the OR for case coverage, instrumentation, troubleshooting
Spine rep: 5:00 AM case start, hands-on with pedicle screws and cages. Cannot do this from Zoom.
Relationship Building
Device sales = surgeon relationships built over lunches, coffee, face time
Ortho rep: Take surgeon to lunch 2-3x/week. Build trust. Not possible remotely.
Physical Product Demos
Need to show implants, instruments, demonstrate technique
Cardio rep: Demo new stent system to interventional cardiologist. Need physical product.
Emergency Coverage
Surgeons call at 6 PM for 7 AM case. Need to deliver sets, cover case
Trauma rep: 2 AM call for emergency surgery. Need to be within 30-60 minutes.
Exceptions: Roles That Are Actually Remote (Sort Of)
Capital Equipment Sales
Selling $500K-$2M systems (robotics, imaging, navigation)
Longer sales cycles (6-12 months), more virtual meetings, but still need site visits for demos
$200K-$350K
Intuitive Surgical (da Vinci), Stryker (Mako), Zimmer (Rosa)
Less OR time, but extensive travel for demos and installations
Clinical Specialist / Trainer
Train surgeons on new products, provide technical support
Travel to train surgeons, but base from home. Still need OR time.
$150K-$220K
Most major device companies have clinical specialist roles
More predictable schedule, but lower comp than territory reps
Inside Sales / Customer Service
Phone-based sales, order taking, customer support
Not true device sales. Office job. Lower comp, no commission upside.
$60K-$90K (much lower than field sales)
Some smaller device companies, distributors
True remote, but not the device sales job most people want
What "Remote" Actually Means in Device Sales
"Remote device sales" means work from home in pajamas
"Remote" means live in low-cost city, travel to your territory
Live in Austin TX (low cost), cover Houston territory (2 hour drive), OR coverage 3-4 days/week
- In-person OR coverage 60-80% of the time
- Face-to-face surgeon meetings
- Travel to territory (sometimes 2-4 hours each way)
- On-call 24/7 for emergencies
Live where you want (lower cost), not forced to live in expensive territory city
How to Pitch "Remote" Arrangements
Live in Lower-Cost City, Cover Territory
Apply for territory within 2-3 hour drive of where you want to live
Live in Sacramento (cheap), cover San Francisco territory (2 hours). Save $2K/month on rent.
Territory is driveable from your preferred city
Willing to Travel 100%
Offer to live anywhere, travel to territory Monday-Friday
Live in Denver, fly to Dallas every Monday, work territory all week, fly home Friday.
Company has open territory that's hard to fill, you're willing to grind

Apply for jobs in cities you already live in
Live in Boston, apply for Boston territory. You're already "remote" from company HQ.
Best approach - no relocation, no pitch needed
Companies Open to Remote Arrangements
Startups
Desperate for experienced reps, flexible on location
Will let you live anywhere if you cover territory effectively
Lower base, equity risk, less job security
Smaller Device Companies
Can't afford to relocate reps, accept remote arrangements
You drive/fly to territory, company doesn't care where you live
Lower comp than Stryker/Medtronic, but more flexibility
Distributorships
Independent business model, flexible
You're 1099, can live anywhere as long as you cover territory
No benefits, all commission, high risk/high reward
Capital Equipment / Robotics
Territory coverage less intense than implants
Some roles allow home-based, but travel 50-70%
Longer sales cycles, different skill set
Companies NOT Open to Remote
Stryker, Zimmer, Medtronic (Big 3)
Require you to live in territory, close to hospitals
Must live within 30-60 minutes of major accounts
None - will not budge on this
Most Ortho/Spine Companies
OR coverage too critical, need 24/7 availability
Live in territory, period
Rare - only if territory is huge and hard to fill
